![]() About the Game The objective - get more balls closest to the target. It is an easy game. Anyone, at any age, can enjoy the sport. It can also be fiercely competitive when played at national and international events. The game is played on an individual "rink" about 12 feet wide by 120 feet long. A full green is 120 feet x 120 feet. It is a carefully manicured grass and a precisely flat surface. The equipment is a set of 4 lawn bowls. To protect the green, only flat shoes (like tennis shoes with no tread are worn. Official tournament clothing is "whites." Not a general requirement, whites are part of the centuries old tradition. Lawn bowls are carefully and accurately rolled. The final result, more bowls close than the opponents, is critical. As your skill develops so do strategies of establishing territory, hitting the jack or other bowls to change position and protecting shots. Lawn bowls roll on a bias. The bias is a result of a weighted side. The bowl will curve to the left or right. The bias curve creates more shot opportunities because it is harder to block. Basic Rules Lawn bowling is played as singles or teams consisting of 2, 3 or 4 players. Play
begins with a coin toss to determine which team goes first. The target ball
(called a "jack") is rolled for distance and centered. With team play the leads "deliver" all their bowls, then the "seconds" and finally the "skips." Only one team scores on an "end." One point is earned for each
bowl closer than the closest opponent bowl. Game length is a predetermined number of "ends."
